mountains and interviews and updates

So, on Saturday Sarah and I attempted to climb Humphreys (the highest peak of the San Francisco Peaks). I’ve done it a few times before, but this was her first time for some reason. I wasn’t expecting the entire trail to be covered in snow. We actually couldn’t make it to the top because the footprints seemed to stop, the snow was like 4 feet deep, and I couldn’t feel my toes. We weren’t set up for that. It’s weird because the side of the mountain that faces town (also faces the sun) has no snow at all. Oh well. The Huxley dog came too and we all had a pretty good time.

Yesterday was interview day. I interviewed Derrick Jensen for over an hour on the phone. He answered everything I asked him and gave me very thoughtful answers. After we got into it, it didn’t really even feel like an interview, but rather a conversation with a friend I admire. I was really struggling to figure out how I would approach writing the interview. I get really sick of the standard Q and A format. You know:

K: Hi Derrick, how are you.
JD: I’m great….

It’s just really lame. I’m going to weave our conversation into a narrative, so it reads more like a scene from a novel or something. It’ll take up more of my time, but I think it’ll be worth it.

I also interviewed Klee Benally, a local filmmaker (he did The Snowbowl Effect), activist and musician (he plays guitar in Blackfire). He also runs the websites savethepeaks.org and stoppeabody.org. I’m doing a project on how local activists “write for the community” and though Klee wouldn’t admit to being a writer, he does have some important messages and he gets them out very effectively though the internet, workshops, his music, and his filmmaking. Anyway, he was very helpful and his answers were well articulated.

Oh, and if you scroll down, I’ve added a little weather-o-meter reflective of the Flagstaff area.

ALSO….I’m printing up stickers. I’m hoping to have them before MARSfest. They will say “Dismantle Globally, Renew Locally” and there will be some simple design with the web address.

…and now, I write.
