Lesbians sentenced for self-defense

On June 14, four African-American women — Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24) — received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them — all because they are lesbians.

Read about the attack and what a worthless douche bag their attacker is.

You know, this is a perfect example of what Derrick Jensen was talking about in this video I saw (maybe I got the links from this blog?). He mentioned that in our fucked up civilization, violence is only allowed to travel down, not up. So, it’s OK for men to be violent towards women, but women aren’t allowed to be violent towards men, not even in self defense.

It works this way with animals, too. Violence against animals goes unpunished, and in certain cases (vivisection) is encouraged. But what happens in a case of animals being violent towards humans (man eating tigers, elephant kills trainer)? We kill it. Can’t let that violence move uphill.

It’s very possible you saw that video here…or at least read me talking about it. The language used on the internet to address these women and this situation is shocking. One headline reads: “Attack of the Killer Lesbians.” It’s victim blaming, plan and simple.
