BP given the green light to murder Lake Michigan.

Just when Lake Michigan was starting to recover from environmental irresponsibility…

WHITING, Ind.

State and federal officials have granted BP PLC permits that will allow its northwestern Indiana oil refinery to release more ammonia and sludge into Lake Michigan, a move that upsets northern Indiana environmentalists.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently gave the company an exemption from environmental laws that cap the amount of toxins discharged into the lake.

“We asked for and were granted a new permit that provides a broader window for us to operate,” BP spokesman Scott Dean said.

Here is BP’s environmental propaganda page. Every oil company has one; lots of green text, deceptive language, and flowery images abound. Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I hate that phrase. It’s actually like an evil oil company pretending to be something it’s not. I guess that’s not really a metaphor.

i don’t know how much this affects the portion of the lake i know and love, but this pisses me off extra because Michigan is my home. I remember as a kid that Lake Huron was always pretty dirty but we swam in it anyway… Lake MI always seemed so clean and clear in comparison. are those days over?

Having spent a large portion of my life in northwest Indiana, I’m much more familiar with Lake Michigan than Huron. I do know that LM has had bouts of environmental catastrophe in the past due to industry in Chicago and Gary. It is much better now; but this news will, no doubt, reverse the lake’s recovery.

Ditto on the hatin’ to defend Lake Michigan and the growing up around there. They’re also (I dunno if A tags work on here, so I’ll just paste the link directly) seeking an *air pollution* exemption as well. Do you suppose they’re figuring out the current Republican president is the next Republican nominees’s greatest detractor, and are trying to get while the gettin’s good, or what?
